There are many causes to tooth discolouration. Some of the most common include the consumption highly coloured foods and drinks (berries, coffee, tea, red wine). Some medications, ageing, smoking and trauma can also cause teeth discoloration.
But getting your teeth whiter at Aperture Dental Practice is now possible with our new Philips ZOOM WhiteSpeed! You can now get your teeth up to eight shades whiter in just one hour!
How does the Philips ZOOM! WhiteSpeed system work?
The Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed lamp is an in-office system, which comprises of a lamp with a variable intensity setting. This means that the treatment can be customised for each individual patient.
The system also includes special desensitisers which help to minimise sensitivity and protect your enamel during the treatment, and different treatment types and strengths to fit your lifestyle. The treatment is only available at a dentist’s office to ensure optimum safety and will be supervised by your dentist.

The procedure for ZOOM! Teeth Whitening
Before: The Assessment
You will firstly need to come in for an assessment of your teeth and gums to ensure that you qualify for ZOOM! Whitening.
In this session, we will look for the following:
- existing restorations
- dental decay
- presence of plaque and calculus
- any prosthetic work (e.g. crowns, bridges, dentures, implants)
- assess your existing tooth shade, to give you an idea of how white your teeth can potentially go!
If there are any areas that need to fixed or cleaned, this will have to be done first before the whitening process. This is because the whitening will not work its best when there is decay or plaque and calculus on your teeth.
BE AWARE that any existing restorations (e.g. fillings, crowns and bridges) will NOT be affected by the whitening. We are usually more concerned about this if it is one of the front teeth. You may opt to change the restoration after the whitening process to match the shade of the rest of the teeth.
We will provide you with some take-home trays at the end of the procedure for home maintenance. This means that impressions of your teeth will be taken if you decide to go ahead with whitening your teeth. This is usually done on the visit before we start your teeth whitening.
On the day you come for your teeth whitening treatment, we will ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. The teeth whitening treatment usually take about an hour’s appointment, but can take longer in some cases.
During: Whitening Day
Your TV program of choice will be ready to play, and your stop button placed in your hand to ensure you can reach us at any time during the procedure.
A BEFORE photo will be taken to compare the results at the end of the procedure. Your teeth will be isolated with a lip retractor, gauze and a liquid dam that goes over the gums. This is all done to protect your gums, tongue and cheeks from the contact with the bleaching material.
Once the bleach is on the teeth, the ZOOM! Lightspeed lamp will take over. This is will be over a maximum of four cycles, with 15 minutes each cycle. At each interval, the bleach will be removed and replenished for another 15-minute cycle. The procedure could take between 45 minutes to an hour.
At any time, the teeth start to get sensitive, you may decide to stop the treatment. Be aware that this may be before the 4th cycle. An AFTER photo will be taken to confirm that it was totally worth it!
After: Ongoing Maintenance
Once everything is cleaned off, it is very important that you do not eat anything coloured or dark (e.g. coffee, tea). Keep to white, yellow or clear foods as much as possible over the next 48 hours. You may want to start using your provided take-home whitening trays and kit to maintain the new shade of white of your teeth.
How long will my ZOOM! Whitening results last?
Whitening treatments help to reduce existing stains, but through consumption of coffee, soft drinks or just through natural ageing, your teeth may eventually become discoloured again. Maintenance whitening can help combat recurring discolouration. Only Philips Zoom at-home whitening products include ACP, which has been shown to help reduce whitening fade-back.
