At Aperture Dental we want to make sure that your child’s experience is a positive one. With care and patience at the forefront of our minds, we are confident your little one will be looking forward to seeing our kids dentist for their yearly checkup!

Our priority is to treat less and educate more. From the first tooth pushing through it is important to set our youngest patients up for the best mouth health as possible. With the help of the government funding under the Child Dental Benefit Schedule we may even be able to bulk bill your child’s appointment. Maintaining good oral hygiene has never been easier with the help of our highly qualified kids dentists.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A KID FRIENDLY DENTIST?

Treating adolescent oral health is so crucial to set someone up for long-term dental health. How a child treats their teeth in the first few years can change the way their adult teeth develop. Without the right dental care for children and education, they may show early signs of decay potential causing issues with the crowding of their adult teeth.

DR ERIK'S ADVICE FOR KIDS

Regular Check-Up

We make their dental check-up fun, so we can maintain their great teeth health! We want your children to look forward to their dental visit so we can positively reinforce good behaviour.

Regular Brushing

It is recommended that children should brush their teeth morning and at night just before bed. Brush for 2 minutes inside, outside, and bite side.

Eat Sweets As Treats

Eating lots of sweet foods throughout the day can make a child’s teeth decay. A good time to enjoy sweet things is just after dinner but before brushing your teeth.

Kids FAQs

When will my baby start erupting teeth?
  • For most babies, their first teeth start erupting between 6 to 10 months. Children get teeth at different times and arrive in any order. All 20 baby teeth will usually arrive by the time your child is 3 years old. The 32 adult teeth then replace baby teeth between the ages of 6 and 20 years.

When should I start cleaning my baby's teeth and how should I do it?
  • Dental care for baby teeth can start before your baby's first tooth appears. Once your baby is about 3 months old, you can gently wipe your baby’s gums using a damp, clean face washer or gauze twice a day. This helps your baby get ready for brushing when the first tooth appears.
  • As soon as the first tooth appears, clean teeth using a soft infant toothbrush designed for children under 2 years. If your baby doesn’t like the toothbrush in their mouth, you can keep using a clean, damp face washer or gauze to wipe the front and back of each tooth.
How to choose the right brush and toothpaste for my child?
  • Choose a toothbrush that is designed for children. It should have a small head and soft bristles.
  • Choosing the right toothpaste:
    • For children 0–18 months of age – use only water, no toothpaste
    • From 18 months until the child turns 6 years old – use a small pea-sized amount of low fluoride children’s toothpaste (check on the pack)
    • From 6 years of age – use a pea-sized amount of standard fluoride toothpaste.
When can my child brush their own teeth?
  • You will need to help your child brush their teeth until they have the ability to do it well enough by themselves (usually between 6 to 9 years old). This includes having the dexterity to wield a toothbrush, the ability to spit out all toothpaste into the sink, and making it your child's responsibility to look after their teeth.
How old should a child be for their first visit to the dentist?
  • It is recommended that children have an oral health when their first tooth comes through, or by their first birthday. This can be done at your family dentist.  Older children should continue to have regular yearly check-ups.
Do I have to pay for my child's dental check-up? (CBDS, Medicare)
  • Introduced by the Department of Human Services, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) provides up to $1,026 worth of dental treatment for eligible children between the ages of 2 to 17. Aperture Dental Practice will bulk bill all treatment that is eligible under this scheme – that means there is no cost to you!

How can I help my child with their trip to the dentist?

  • To lessen the anxiety of your child in dental treatment, make dental check-ups a normal part of our lives. Maintain a positive attitude and encourage “brave behaviour”. Dress them comfortably on the day, and bring a comfort object if needed (such as a favourite toy or blanket) 😊
