Dentures

If you have missing teeth, one of the options for replacing them are dentures.

A denture is removable, which means it needs to be taken out when you clean your remaining teeth, or go to sleep. Here at Aperture Dental Practice, we are privileged to have a resident Prosthetist, Pei-Song Zhao, who has a wealth of experience with all types of dentures.

What are the different types of dentures?

Acrylic dentures

This type of denture is made of plastic. The replacement teeth are connected by a pink material called acrylic. The advantage of acrylic dentures is th

at it is easily made, modified and is cheaper. Clasps can be embedded into the acrylic to hook on to the existing teeth.

Chrome dentures

Chrome dentures have metal connectors. The advantage of using metal is that the frame is strong in thin section. Also, the clasps used to hook on to the teeth are part of the metal frame. This type of denture fits very snugly to the teeth and can last for a long time. Because of its high strength, the frame doesn’t even need to cover the whole palate

Valplast dentures

Valplast dentures are made of a strong, but flexible material. Very similar to acrylic in terms of colour, it has several other advantages. Because it is flexible, it is very comfortable to wear and some even say it is unnoticeable in the mouth. However, the main reason for getting this denture is the Valplast clasp. Clasps on the other types of dentures are made of metal, and can be very obvious if they are placed in the front teeth. Valplast clasps are gum colour (pink).

Immediate dentures

If you need a tooth removed and then replaced with a denture, we normally suggest that the denture be made first. Once the denture is complete, the tooth can be extracted, and the new dentures can be fitted immediately. These dentures are normally simple and may need to be adjusted further when the extraction socket heals.

Full dentures

If you have no teeth, you will need full dentures. These dentures need to be made carefully because there are no teeth to hold the dentures in and it depends almost entirely on suction to the tissues in the mouth. Also, providing a picture of how your teeth used to look like definitely helps! Retention of full dentures greatly increases if they are attached to implants. Mini implants are up and coming, so watch this space.

A removable partial denture

A removable partial denture – made of plastic and metal that clip to adjacent healthy teeth in order to fill the gaps created by missing teeth.

Most spaces can be filled with a removable denture. The primary advantage of this option is the reduced cost compared to that of bridgework or implants. The procedure is also less invasive (no surgery involved, and little or no adjustment to the existing teeth) and is reversible. These appliances typically last about 10 years.

Relines

A reline is done when the dentures are ill fitting. This happens when the dentures are old, or an extraction had been done recently. In both cases the jaws have changed shape.

There are two types of relines:

  1. Hard relines are typically used in most situations.
  2. Soft relines are considered when the hard-acrylic material cannot be tolerated. It is much more comfortable than a hard surface and helps especially in the lower jaws where the mental nerve is close to the fitting surface, or ulcers occur frequently due to the dentures rubbing on the tissues.

The difficulties that come with dentures:

Many people who wear partial dentures say they are reluctant to smile or laugh in public because they are afraid their denture may slip, or that the wires may show. They can impact the ability to eat, since it can fall out. Removable partial dentures can increase the build-up of plaque around the supporting teeth, which can lead to tooth decay or gum disease. Pressure or movement of the partial can result in trauma to the surrounding teeth or gums.

Just like bridges, dentures do nothing to prevent loss of bone in the jaw. In fact, if the dentures are not supported well, it can lead to further damage to the surrounding bone and gums, causing the existing teeth to become sensitive and loose.
